Great Thin Layer Chromatography video!

There's some great videos posted around the interwebs about Thin Layer Chromatography.

This video was just posted and we thought it was well worth sharing:

How to snap a scored prep thin layer chromatography plate

We have been manufacturing pre-scored thin layer chromatography plates for decades.

These plates allow people to quickly and easily take a 20 x 20 cm plate and snap it into smaller plates.

We are regularly asked for the best method to snap the preparative layer plates, here's a quick video demonstration:

Some Applications of Thin Layer Chromatography

VARIOUS APPLICATIONS OF THIN LAYER CHROMATOGRAPHY (TLC) ARE AS FOLLOWS:

Advantages of Thin Layer Chromatography

describe the image

Applications and Advantages of Thin Layer Chromatography

We are thrilled to find web sites, blogs, videos, and posts centered around chromatography, and we enjoy sharing these finds!describe the image

Nitin Vasava is a pharmacist who created the blog pharmastuff4u.

Nitin has posted a couple of very useful lists, here's excerpts:

TLC Application | Some Applications of Thin Layer Chromatography

VARIOUS APPLICATIONS OF THIN LAYER CHROMATOGRAPHY (TLC) ARE AS FOLLOWS:

  1. Purity of  any sample : Purity of sample can be carried out with TLC. Direct comparison  is done between the sample and the standard or authentic sample; if any impurity is detected, then it shows extra spots and this can be detected easily.
  2. Identification of compounds: Thin layer chromatography can be employed in purification, isolation and identification  of natural products like volatile oil or essential oil, fixed oil, waxes, terpenes, alkaloids, glycosides, steriods etc.
  3. Examination of reactions: Reaction mixture can be examined by Thin layer chromatography to access whether the reaction is complete or not. This method is also used in checking other separational processes and purification processes like distillation, molecular distillation etc.

Advantages of Thin layer Chromatography (TLC)

SOME OF THE ADVANTAGES OF THIN LAYER CHROMATOGRAPHY (TLC) ARE AS FOLLOWS:-

  1. Less equipment is required.
  2. Very little time for separation is required.
  3. It is more sensitive.
  4. The lower detection limit of analytical sample in TLC is approximately one decimal lower than that is paper chromatography and very small quantities of sample is sufficient for analysis.

Collection of Thin Layer Chromatography Videos

There are a number of videos available that demonstrate thin layer chromatography - we figured it might be helpful to put some of these here as an easy reference.

NOTE: we were not involved with the production of any of these videos, we want to make sure you give credit where credit is due - so we've included any information we can from the individuals and organizations responsible for these productions. Also, these videos are offered in no particular order.

Please feel free to send along any videos to add to the collection.

Thin Layer Chromatography helps in discovering new fat over lunch

We are firm believers in inspiration and solutions coming to us at any place and any time - so we were happy to see this story:

Scientists discover new fat over lunch

Uncovering new fats, or lipids, with links to diseases in the human eye is as easy as taking a lunch break, according to UOW chemists from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Free Radical Chemistry and Biotechnology.Dr. Blanksby

The research, conducted by UOW Associate Professor Stephen Blanksby and his PhD student Shane Ellis, used ozone naturally present in laboratory air to find previously unknown lipids in the human lens. Their work was featured as a hot article in a recent edition of the scientific journal, Analyst.

“My lunch breaks are never unproductive,” according to Shane.

....

Using a combination of two methods called desorption electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (DESI) and thin layer chromatography (TLC) that the group combined specifically for these experiments, lipids can be characterised in one simple analysis, a significant improvement on older methods.

We tip our hats to Professor Blanksby and Mr. Ellis.
